A young man has died of dengue at the Kumudini Hospital in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail. The deceased is Arif Hossain Kajol, 28, from Khoilshindur village in Uwarshi union of the upazila.
He died in the MMA ward of the hospital around 10pm on Wednesday, three days after he was admitted there with fever.
Kumudini Hospital Director Dr Pradip Kumar Rai told Dhaka Tribune that Kajol was admitted to the hospital with extreme fever on August 4. He was supposed to receive a blood transfusion, but he died before that.
His body was handed over to his family at night.
The director further said around dengue 104 patients have been treated in this hospital as of yet. Among them, a total of 91 patients recovered and returned home.
Currently, some 13 dengue patients are being treated at the Kumudini Hospital and six more were admitted in the last 24 hours.
According to the Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the official death toll is 23.
With this new death, the unofficial death toll rises to 70.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, DGHS said the number of admitted patients currently undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 8,707.Since January 1 till August 7, a total of 32,340 people have been affected by dengue.
