Two police personnel have been suspended for allegedly helping Nepali nationals flee Bangladesh hours before law enforcement launched an operation to arrest them in connection with involvement in casino business in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter on Thursday.

He was exchanging views with the executive committee of Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (Crab) at the DMP headquarters in the capital.

On September 18, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted raids on illegal casinos in Fakirerpool Young Men's Club, Dhaka Wanderers' Club, also in the Fakirapool neighbourhood, Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra in Gulistan, and Golden Dhaka Bangladesh, in Banani.

On early hours of September 19, law enforcement raided an apartment building in Segun Bagicha for apprehending some Nepal nationals, but found no one there.

The DMP chief said: "Our two members have been identified in CCTV footage and subsequently they have been suspended."

They are -- Constable Dipanker Chakma of Ramna police station, and DMP Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Mithu, police sources said.

Shafiqul said: "We are investigating whether police are involved in casino business or not.

"If anyone is found guilty, action will follow them," he said.
