Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Saiful Islam has said students involved with the murder of Buet student Abrar Fahad will be expelled from the institution.

Almost 40 hours after Abrar’s murder, the VC came before the protesting students in front of the main gate of Rashid Bhaban (VC office) Tuesday evening.

The VC could not give immediate solution to the demands of the students but said even though he agreed with the demands in principle, he had some limitations to meeting all of them. He said he was working to find a way to meet all of the demands.

“I have talked to the deputy minister of education. Though I agree with the demands in principle but I do not have the authorities to meet all of them,” he said, adding that the authorities will act according to their jurisdiction.

He vowed that the perpetrators will be expelled from Buet following the rules of the university. The VC has no comment when the students asked why he missed Abrar’s namaz-e-janaza.

Abrar, a second year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of the university was brutally beaten to death on Monday. The VC was supposed to come in front of the students around 5pm as per the ultimatum given by the students.

But, he came in front of the students around 6pm. Before that students locked the main gate of the campus and took position in front of the VC office.

When the students came to know that the VC was holding a meeting with other officials in his office, they locked up his room too. They said they would not move till VC comes in front of the students and each of the demands are met.

The VC went to his office on Monday and also took part in a meeting there but he did not go to the Sher-e-Bangla Hall where Abrar was killed. The students were aggrieved as their VC was not there during the crisis.

When they got the VC on Tuesday around 6pm, they requested him to hear all of the demands they have but the VC did refused to hear their demands in an open gathering.  After a while the VC went inside his office and students once again locked the office and have been waiting outside till this report was around 8pm.

Some Chhatra League leaders have been accused of beating him for his alleged involvement with Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Meanwhile, Abrar's father BarkatUllah filed a murder case against 19 people with Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening. Later, Bangladesh Chhatra League expelled 11 of its members permanently from the organization for their involvement in Abrar’s murder.

Abrar’s death sparked protest across Bangladesh. The protesters have demanded justice for Abrar and capital punishment for the murderers. As of now, 13 people have been arrested in connection to the murder.
