BUET VC refuses to step down

Prof Dr Saiful Islam, vice-chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet), has refused to step down from his post, brushing off students’ demand made during protests against the murder of a student on campus.

"I did not do anything wrong. So, why should I resign?" he said in response to queries from journalists, after offering prayers at the grave of slain Abrar Fahad in Kumarkhali, Kushtia on Wednesday afternoon.

Abrar, a second year EEE student, was beaten to death by some leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Buet unit inside the university’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall late Sunday night.

As police made a number of arrests throughout Monday, agitating students had alleged the VC was a no show for a long time to ensure proper action.

Prof Saiful claimed he had reached the hall around 4pm Monday after learning about the incident. “The hall provost was informed around 3am and had started addressing the issue since then.”

Saying necessary legal steps were taken immediately after the incident, he added: "We have already made an inquiry and taken action." Regarding the students’ demand to ban on student politics in Buet, the VC said: "We agree with them.

"We are waiting for the education minister. When she returns [home from abroad], we will discuss the issue and take steps. We are seriously considering this.”

The leaders of Chhatra League’s Buet unit stand accused of beating Abrar to death for having reported ties to Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Abrar's father filed a murder case against 19 people at Chawkbazar police station on Monday evening. Until Wednesday, 13 people were arrested.
