Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) has expelled 26 students on different terms — nine of whom were expelled from their respective dormitories for life — over ragging allegations.

The punishment includes academic suspension and expulsion from dormitories, Directorate of Student's Welfare (DSW) Director Prof Dr Md Mizanur Rahman told journalists at a press briefing in front of the vice-chancellor’s office on Thursday.

The Board of Residence and Discipline of the university took the action after holding its meeting on Wednesday, he said.

"The probe body which was formed to investigate the complaints related to ragging in the Suhrawardy Hall and Ahsan Ullah Hall recommend punishment for these 26 students," added Prof Mizanur, also the board’s member secretary.

The decision of punishment including the expulsion of those involved with the gruesome murder of Abrar Fahad were two of the three fresh demands made by the general students that were met.

These students have been protesting for over a month to ensure justice for Abrar and the latest action was taken amidst these protests.

A total of 20 students of Suhrawardy Hall were punished for their involvement in ragging related incidents. Among those, three were suspended from their academic activities in the university and were also expelled from their residential dorm.

The other 17 were suspended from their respective hall with a warning.

Six students of Ahsan Ullah Hall were suspended from their academic activities and expelled from their residential dorm for ragging. Another four students of the hall were issued strict warning.

Term finals of all departments in Buet were scheduled to start on October 20, but they were postponed due to the protest.

Abrar, a student of electrical and electronic engineering department, was beaten to death by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Buet unit inside the university's Sher-e-Bangla Hall between October 6 evening and early October 7.

On November 21, the university authorities expelled 26 students for life, 25 of whom were formally charged with the murder by police.

On November 13, police had submitted the charge sheet against 25 Buet students -- most of them Buet Chhatra League’s leaders and activists -- in a murder case filed by Abrar's father.
