Narsingdi district unit Awami League has agreed in principle to expel Tamanna Nusrat Bubly, a lawmaker for reserved seats for women, from the party on allegation of a proxy appearing in her examinations on her behalf.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party's district unit on Friday, the unit President Muhammad Nazrul Islam, also the Narsingdi 1 constituency lawmaker, said.

The meeting was held at the residence of local lawmaker Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, also the industries minister, at Gotashia village in Monohardi upazila in the afternoon.

Nazrul Islam said: "Being a lawmaker, she [Bubly] committed such crime and spoiled the image of the country, the party and the parliament before the world. That is why a decision to expel her has been taken in principle.

"The decision is being sent to the central committee of the party," he added.

In an immediate reaction, Bubly, also the district unit Awami League's women affairs secretary, told that the initiative is a part of conspiracy against her.

Earlier on October 20, Tamanna Nusrat Bubly was expelled from Bangladesh Open University (BOU) after allegedly hiring as many as eight lookalikes to take examinations in her place.

She was accused of paying the lookalikes to pretend to be her in at least 13 tests.

The scandal emerged on October 18, after private broadcaster Nagorik TV entered an examination hall in Narsingdi and confronted one of the women posing as Bubly, in a video that went viral on social media.

Bubly was studying for a Bachelor of Arts degree with the BOU.

BOU Vice Chancellor MA Mannan said: "We have cancelled her enrollment. She will never be able to get admitted here again."
