Suspected drug trader killed in Noakhali gunfight

A suspected drug trader has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Noakhali district. The incident occurred in Hatpukuria area of Chatkhil upazila early Monday.

The deceased is Monir Hossain, 36, son of Nuruzzaman from Porkot union of the upazila.

Chatkhil police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwarul Islam said: "Monir was arrested on Sunday. Later we took him to Hatpukuria are to recover drugs and firearms."

"On reaching the spot, Monir's associates opened fire at us, triggering a gunfight."

The OC said: "Monir along with Sub Inspector (SI) Krishna Kumar Das, Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Emran Ali and ASI Abdul Wadud were caught in the line of fire."

"They were rushed to Noakhali General Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared Monir dead."

Monir had sixteen cases,including a drug case, filed against him with different police stations. His body has been sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy, the OC added.   

Police has also recovered a firearm, a sharp weapon, four rounds of bullets and fifty yaba pills from the spot.
