Fardin Iftekhar Dihan, the lone accused in a case filed over the rape and murder of an O Level student, has been sent to jail after he confessed to the charges against him before a Dhaka court.

He was taken to the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mamunur Rashid on Friday afternoon, where he confessed to his crimes under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Swapan Kumar, general recording officer (GRO) of the court, said Dihan was taken to the magistrate’s chamber to record his statement.

Earlier in the day, the victim's father filed the case against Dihan with Kalabagan police station, said Sub-Inspector Asaduzzaman, investigating officer (IO) of the case.

Although the age of the accused was recorded as 18 years old in case documents, police said they would only be able to confirm this after official documents are available.

A relative of the victim said Dihan is an A Level student at a school in Dhaka.

What happened earlier

On Thursday, the victim left her house at around 11:45am after telling her mother over the phone that she was going to a coaching class to collect some worksheets, according to the case statement.

Dihan called the victim's mother at 1:18pm and said her daughter had gone to his house at Kalabagan, where she had fallen sick.

Dihan asked her mother to go to the emergency department of Anwer Khan Modern Hospital, where her daughter had been taken.

When the victim's mother reached the hospital, the on-duty doctor informed her that her daughter had been murdered after rape, said the case statement.

The parents of the victim learnt later that Dihan had enticed their daughter to go to his flat, which was empty as the other members of his family were out at the time. He raped their daughter there and took her to the hospital when she started to bleed profusely.

Upon being informed about the incident, police went to the hospital and apprehended Dihan along with three of his friends.

Police later released the three friends, as there was no evidence that they were involved in the incident.

Sajjadur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC) of Ramna Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said the other three boys were handed over to their parents.

Police also collected the victim's body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.

Doctors have found evidence of rape during autopsy of the victim.

After completing the autopsy on Friday afternoon, Dr Sohail Mahmud, head of the forensic department at Dhaka Medical College, said the victim died due to excessive bleeding in her vaginal and anal areas.

Samples were also collected for DNA profiling. The required samples were collected and sent for chemical testing to determine whether an anaesthetic drug was administered to the victim before death.

Dr Sohail added that the real cause of death could be ascertained after receiving the reports.

Earlier, necessary evidence had been collected to determine the age of the girl. Later, the girl’s relatives received the body from the hospital to bury her.

Protest in Dhaka

Around 50 demonstrators have protested against the rape and murder of the O Level student.

Under the banner "Dhorshon O Bicharhinotar Biruddhe Bangladesh,” students, youths and activists organized a rally that began in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka and ended with a demonstration at Paltan intersection on Friday morning.

Samajtantrik Chhatra Front President (Dhaka) Rafiqujjaman Farid said people from all quarters, including various student, youth and women’s rights organizations, will gather for a mass rally against rape in Dhaka's Shahbagh on February 12.

They also pressed nine-point demands of previous anti-rape protests, which include ensuring exemplary punishment of the perpetrators of rape and violence against women.

Police urges not to jump to conclusions

Police have urged the public not to jump to the conclusions on social media platforms about the rape and murder of the O Level student.

DMP Ramna Zone DC Sajjadur Rahman made the remarks after people started using hashtags mentioning prime accused Fardin Iftekhar Dihan as a rapist.

While speaking to reporters at the Crime Reporters Association of Bangladesh (CRAB) in Dhaka's Segunbagicha, the police official said the victim’s father had claimed that his daughter had been raped, but the truth of the matter will be determined once the forensic report is released and during investigation.
