A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced 13 people to death and 19 others to life imprisonment in a case filed over the killing of six students on suspicion of their being dacoits in Aminbazar, Savar, in 2011.

Judge Ismat Jahan of Dhaka 2nd Additional District and Sessions Judge Court handed down the verdict in a jam-packed courtroom.

The death row convicts are Abdul Malek, Saif Member, Abdur Rashid, Ismail Hossain Repu, Jamsher Ali, Mir Hossain, Mojibur Rahman, Anwar Hossain, Rojob Ali, Alam Nura, Mohammad Rana, Abdul Hanif and Aslam Miah. The court also fined them Tk 20,000 each.

The 13 convicts were also sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment and fined Tk 10,000 each under another section of the penal code.

The life term convicts are Shahin Ahmed, Farid Khan, Rajib Hossain, Wasim, Sattar, Selim, Monir Hossain, Alamgir, Mobarak Hossain, Akhil Khandaker, Bashir, Rubel, Nur Islam, Shahdan Hossain, Tutul, Masud, Mokhles, Totul and Saiful. They were also fined Tk 10,000 each.

The 19 convicts were also sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment each under another charge.

The court, however, acquitted 25 other accused as the charges against them in the case were not proved.

After the verdict was pronounced, Public Prosecutor Shakila Jasmin Mitu expressed satisfaction with it, noting that justice had been served.

Combination of file photos show Tipu Sultan, Towhidur Rahman Palash, Kamruzzaman Kanto, Ibrahim Khalil, Shams Rahim Shamam and Sitaf Jabi Munif, who were beaten to death by a mob on the night of July 18, 2011 at Amin Bazar, on the outskirts of capital DhakaFamily members of the victims also said they were satisfied with the verdict. They called for an implementation of the verdict as soon as possible.

Earlier on November 22, the court had set the date for pronouncing judgement in the case after both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments.

A total of 55 out of the 92 witnesses testified before the court in the case.

According to the case, on the night of Shab-e-Barat of July 18, 2011, seven friends - students of different academic institutions in Dhaka - went on a trip to Bardeshi village near Aminbazar bridge under Savar police station in Dhaka.

A gang in the area pounced on the students, informing the villagers of Bardeshi that they had caught a group of “robbers”. The misled villagers attacked the youths, leading to the deaths.

The dead students were Tipu Sultan of Tejgaon College, Towhidur Rahman Palash, Kamruzzaman Kanto and Ibrahim Khalil of Mirpur Bangla College, Shams Rahim Shamam of Maple Leaf International School and Sitaf Jabi Munif of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology.

Their friend Al Amin, who was with them, was the lone survivor.

The charge-sheet in the case was filed against 60 on January 7, 2013, while the court on July 8, 2013, framed charges against them. Of the 60 accused, three people died of natural causes during the course of the trial.
